When I started as a playwright, the companies who staged my early productions couldn’t always afford to hire a sound designer. Since sound mattered a great deal to me, I took it upon myself to make music for the shows, teaching myself ProTools, Logic and Ableton, and drawing from my time playing piano and drums in bands as a teenager. At that time, I couldn’t afford this software so I would download trial versions of the apps and then record everything I made by running an audio cord from the headphone jack into a MiniDisc recorder. Everything I made was a one-time occurrence, so in the credits for these productions, I would say “original music” by the mysterious “Occurrence.” Initially, I didn’t think much of these short pieces beyond the context for what they were made for, but friends encouraged me to take my music more seriously. From 2006-2013, I made a lot of recordings, solo and some with my friend Wayne Feldman. I would share them on CD-Rs with friends and even a few releases made it onto Bandcamp. In 2014, I reached out to my college friend Cat Hollyer who I hadn’t seen in 20 years and asked if she wanted to sing on a new song that I was working on. That is when Occurrence as a band came into being. I deleted all the older recordings and started a new chapter.
